Don’t Get Locked Out of Your House. Tips from Century 21 Award and Wells Fargo.

by Linda Ring 17. March 2012 12:36

Sooner or later, almost everybody gets locked out of the house. You may think that getting locked out of the house won't happen to you, but just you wait. If you don't take Century 21 Award and Wells Fargopreventative measures against getting locked out, it could very well happen when you least expect it.

I never thought it would happen to me, but one day I lost my house keys. I pulled them out of my bag, and the ring holding my keys went flying, unnoticed. When I got home, I discovered that I was locked out. So, I hauled a ladder out of the garage and climbed it, hoping to crawl in the second floor window. The ladder wasn't high enough to reach the window ledge. In my infinite wisdom, I jumped up and flung my body through the open window head first. I could have killed myself. I don't recommend that anybody try this stupid solution.

How to Not Get Locked Out of the House

One thing you absolutely do not want to do is to leave a door or window unlocked as protection against getting locked out. Because if you know how to break in to your house, a burglar can easily discover that method, too. Always lock your doors and windows.

The secret to avoid getting locked out of the house is to make an extra set of keys, and make sure you have access to a spare key in the event you are locked out.

If you do not have an extra key, you may need to call a locksmith. Do not kick in the door because you may end up replacing the door jamb, door frame and your door, which is far more expensive than paying a locksmith. Ditto for breaking a window. Locksmiths are cheaper. Just in case, program a locksmith's phone number into your cell.

Good Places to Stash a House Key

You can't have too many house keys. First, it helps if all the locks in your home are keyed to one key. You can remove your door knobs and take them to a hardware store, do it yourself (if you know how) or call a locksmith to change all the locks so they unlock with the same key. Here are places to hide an extra key: San Diego Real Estate

  • Give an extra key to a friend, family member or neighbor whom you trust.
  • Buy a fake rock, put the key inside and hide the rock in the garden. Make sure the rock looks real because burglars know how to look for these.
  • Carry an extra key in a briefcase or, if you're a woman, your bag.
  • Install a wireless keypad on the outside of your garage and hide a key inside the garage. Bear in mind that in the event of a power failure, your garage door may not open.
  • Lock the key inside your electrical panel and lock the panel with a combination padlock.
  • Attach a heavy duty contractor's box to a gas pipe and put the key inside.
Bad Places to Stash a House Key

Many burglars prefer to enter homes through unlocked doors, but they rarely take the time to search for a key. Breaking a window is faster and more convenient for crooks. Still, that doesn't mean you should leave a key in a conspicuous spot where a burglar is likely to find it. Here are bad places to hide an extra key:

  • Under the mat. First place people look, not to mention, the wind might blow it off the steps.
  • Under a planter.
  • In the mailbox.
  • In your car's glove box.
  • Taped inside a gutter.
  • On a window ledge.
  • On your dog's collar.
  • In the lock itself.

Now of course, after I inflicted bodily harm by thrusting myself through my second-floor window, I found my house keys the following morning, lying on the floor of my office. That episode was the turning point for me, and now I will never get locked out of my house. Providing, I should add, if I can remember where I hid my extra key.

Wells Fargo Hires Powerhouse Lender-Sherice Grainger!

by Linda Ring 4. March 2012 11:37

Wells Fargo History

In 1852 Henry Wells and William Fargo founded Wells, Fargo & Co. to serve the West. The new company offered banking (buying gold, and selling paper bank drafts as good as gold) - and express (rapid delivery of the gold and anything else valuable).

thumbnailCAOPP3M5
Wells Fargo opened for business in the gold rush port of San Francisco, and soon Wells Fargo’s agents opened offices in the other new cities and mining camps of the West. In the boom and bust economy of the 1850s, Wells Fargo earned a reputation of trust by dealing rapidly and responsibly with people’s money. In the 1860s, it earned everlasting fame - and its corporate symbol - with the grand adventure of the overland stagecoach line.

Wells Fargo’s Great Overland Mail
Wells Fargo sent its business by the fastest means possible: stagecoach, steamship, railroad, pony rider or telegraph. In 1858, Wells Fargo helped start the Overland Mail Company - the famed “Butterfield Line” - to meet the demand for speedy communications across the west. In 1861, Wells Fargo also took over operations of the western leg of the famed, but short-lived, Pony Express.

In 1866, Wells Fargo combined all the major western stage lines. Stagecoaches bearing the name Wells, Fargo & Co. rolled over 3,000 miles of territory, from California to Nebraska, and from Colorado into the mining regions of Montana and Idaho.

Ocean-to-Ocean
After the completion of the transcontinental railroad in 1869, Wells Fargo increasingly rode the rails. In 1888, after expanding along the new steel network awf_firstoff1_photoacross the Northeast into New York, Wells Fargo became the country’s first nationwide express company. It adopted the motto “Ocean-to-Ocean” to describe its service that connected over 2,500 communities in 25 states, and “Over-the-Seas” to highlight its lines linking America’s increasingly global economy.

Wells Fargo rushed customers’ business from the urban centers of New York and New Jersey, through the rail hub of Chicago and farming regions of the Midwest, to ranching and mining centers in Texas and Arizona, and to lumber mill towns in the Pacific Northwest. Wells Fargo agents in towns large and small offered basic financial services like money orders, travelers checks, and transfer of funds by telegraph. Always, though, wherever there was mining, from Alaska to Arizona, Wells Fargo guarded the gold.

By 1910 the Company’s network linked 6,000 locations, including new offices in the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes regions. It was in these towns that the famed “Wells Fargo Wagon” delivered goods of all sorts, from a grey macinaw to some grapefruit from Tampa, as the song from the Music Man goes.

Present days, We first published our Vision & Values in the early 1990s as Wells Fargo’s predecessor, Norwest Corporation. Our industry, our world and our company have changed a lot since then. We’ve grown from a network of small Midwestern banks into a national company with a global reputation. We’re the product of hundreds of combinations. Tens of thousands of our team members today trace their heritage to our ancestor companies.

A county fair without animals just wouldn't be the same. You can see animals on display, farm equipment, animal shows and of course, the ever-popular Junior Livestock Auction, where San Diego County's young people auction the animals they have hand-raised during the past year.

Consumer Sentiment Improving Including San Diego County, Fannie Mae Survey Shows

by Linda Ring 11. February 2012 13:41

Respondents from a Fannie Mae National Housing Survey for January 2012 expressed expectations for home prices to increase by 1 percent over the next 12 months including homes in San Diego County and most Americans continue to expect no change in mortgage rates.

This marks the fourth month in a row consumer expectation was positive.

“The Federal Reserve’s pledge to keep interest rates low beyond 2014, extending their prior time frame of mid-2013 announced in the summer, appears to have been reflected in the rising share of consumers expecting the rate to remain near recoSan Diego Real Estaterd low levels for another year,” said Doug Duncan, VP and chief economist for Fannie Mae.

“At the same time, consumers expect home prices to rise over the next year including San Diego properties, extending the streak of rising home price expectations to four months. If the employment market continues to strengthen, it is unlikely that the Fed will be able to keep its low interest pledge for long, and a more meaningful housing recovery may not be far behind if consumers are faced with the prospect of rising mortgage rates and home prices amid increased job security,” said Duncan.

The Fannie Mae survey polled 1,000 Americans through a telephone interview to assess attitudes towards different areas of the mortgage industry, including owning and renting, rates, homeownership distress, and the economy.

Homeowners and renters interviewed were asked more than 100 questions to track attitudinal shifts, and the survey was conducted between January 9 and January 27, 2012.

Survey Highlights

*The percentage of respondents who said the economy is on the right track was at 30 percent, an 8 percent increase since last November. The percentage who said the economy is on the wrong track was at 63 percent, a 6 point decrease since last November.

*While 51 percent of respondents expect home prices to stay the same, 28 percent said they expect prices to rise, which is a 2 point increase since last month. Sixteen percent said they expect prices to decline.

*Forty-four percent of respondents said their personal financial situation will get better over the next 12 months, as opposed to the 41 percent who said it will stay the same.
